Massive efforts needed to reduce salt intake and protect lives

Salt or the so-called table salt (sodium chloride) is the main source of sodium, although it also could be found in other condiments, such as sodium glutamate. Sodium is an essential nutrient, which increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and premature death when eaten in excess, which are strong arguments to reduce the overall salt consumption in the world. Moreover, implementing highly cost-effective sodium reduction policies could save an estimated 7 million lives globally by 2030.

Why is salt consumption in the world still at high levels? And which countries have comprehensive packages of recommended policies to reduce sodium intake? What tools and measures are being taken to reduce sodium consumption? These and more questions will be answered in the article published by the World Health Organisation.
